Runners need a lot of potassium in their diet in order to alleviate muscle cramps. This helps in having a better run.

Yoghurt with bananas makes a great pre-run snack. Make sure you eat at least 90 minutes before your run.

2. Carrot and Celery Sticks

Carrot and celery sticks make a great snack. Whenever you feel hungry, try a few of these all-natural snack bars. They fill you up, are high in minerals and vitamins, and are extremely low-calorie.

3. Apple and peanut butter slices

You've heard that trite saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" - well, turns out it's kind of true! Apples are extremely healthy, and a good fruit for runners. In addition, peanut butter is a great source of healthy fat and protein. However, make sure you go for peanut butter that's low in added sugar and hydrogenated oils. Eaten together, this is one great tasting snack.

Dinner Party - How To Plan The Perfect Dinner Party


There are many different aspects to think about and consider when deciding to hold a dinner party, it's better to go through the various stages with a notebook and pencil at hand to jot things down. Who is the party for; is it family, friends, an informal gathering of a group from work, or personal friends, or a dinner party concerning work. These last questions make a difference when organizing the party.

On deciding who the dinner party is for, let people know probably one week or two in advance. This will give time for any alternate arrangements if anybody has to cancel, and also arrange the time, say maybe 7.30pm for drinks before dinner at 8pm. Have a choice of alcohol, non-alcoholic, and fruit drinks to choose from to suit all tastes, and a few nibbles dotted around the room. This allows for people to mingle, especially if a couple don't really know the other guests. Once all this has been achieved then the planning of the menu can be addressed, it is well worth checking out if any of the party has any food allergies, or if anybody is vegetarian, this will save embarrassment during the evening.

Consider the planning of the table. Is there going to be a lovely crisp white table cloth, creating color with napkins, or place mats? This is obviously the host's personal choice, depending on whether this is a formal or informal party. Other choices for the table may be some small candles, or small bowls of flowers, or a centerpiece.

When holding a dinner party, the choice of food needs to be addressed carefully. Don't try to cook a recipe you have never used before. This only ends in disaster, plus a huge embarrassment which nobody, the host or the guests want. If a new recipe is chosen, try it out a few weeks before the party a couple of times, till you are confident it will be all right on that night.

A great tip; sit down and plan the menu from start to finish jotting down all the fresh ingredients you will need, checking the cupboard to check that all the herbs you may use are in date, even down to the wine you will be serving with the food, and anything non-alcoholic for those who don't drink.

On the day of the dinner party, make sure to be up early for anything that you have to go and get that you forgot on the list, or fresh fish, meat, whatever the menu is. Check off items off your list as you get them.

It's a good idea to have everything involving the menu written down separate on a list, making it easier to keep track of things. If a starter can be made and kept in the freezer till about half an hour before the meal, then that is one course less to worry about, and the same goes for the dessert.

Everything that can be prepared in advance leaves it a lot less stressful for the host. Once all this has been taken care of, the table checked, the host showered and dressed, you can sit back calmly and wait for the guests to arrive.

One last tip; leave a new list in the kitchen pinned up and easy to read, when collecting the starters, to have a quick glance at the list to see what may need pulling out of the freezer, or putting into the oven, and the party should flow nicely.

Health Insurance Basics - All About Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

A Health Savings Account is an account that is owned by an individual used to pay for current and future medical expenses. These accounts are offered in conjunction with a “High Deductible Health Plan.”

High Deductible Health Plans are health insurance policies that do not cover first dollar medical expenses, other than preventative care. They can also be a:

• HMO
• PPO
• Indemnity plan

Health Savings Accounts were created by the December 8, 2003 Medicare legislation that was signed into law by President Bush. These accounts are modeled after Archer MSAs.

Individuals who are eligible for HSAs include those that are:

• Covered by an HDHP
• Not covered by health insurance
• Not enrolled in Medicare
• Can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return

There are no income limits that contribute to HSAs and people are not required to have earned an income to contribute to an HSA.

There are certain types of medical benefits that will make you ineligible for an HAS. These are typically referred to as “1st dollar” medical benefits, such as:

• Medicare
• Flexible Spending Arrangements
• Health Reimbursement Arrangements
• Tricare Coverage

A high deductible plan is a health insurance with a minimum deductible that is $1,100 for individual coverage and $2,200 for family coverage. Annual out-of-pocket is limited and includes deductible as well as co-pays and are set at $5,500 for individuals and $11,000 for family coverage. All covered benefits in a plan must apply to the plan deductible and include prescription drugs.

If HDHP provides prescription drug benefits, then the prescription drug expenses must be subject to a deductible or the individual may not contribute to the Health Savings Account.

In a high deductible plan, preventative care does not include any service or benefit that is intended to treat an illness, condition or injury that is already in existence. There are certain drugs and medications that can be considered preventative care. These drugs are drugs such as cholesterol-lowering medication for individuals who are suffering from high-cholesterol.

Contributions to a HAS can be made by either the employer or individual and both. If the contributions are made by the employer, the amount is not taxable. If the contribution is made by an individual, the amount is considered an “above the line” deduction.

If others make contributions on behalf of the individual, these contributions can be deducted by the individual as well. As of 2007, individuals are allowed a one-time transfer from their IRA to an HAS as well. There are maximums that are set at $2,850 for self-only coverage and $5,650 for family coverage. Once an individual is enrolled in any type of Medicare, they cannot receive contributions to their account.

Although there are numerous benefits to Health Savings Accounts, there are also a few drawbacks. The main drawback is that you must have your deductible paid before you can receive benefits from your health insurance policy. Although these accounts pay for your basic preventative care, there are certain areas afterwards that may not be covered.

These plans often tend to benefit only two groups of people, those that are very healthy and those that are very ill. This is because you typically don’t have to pay for many medical expenses. At the same time, those who are very ill and do have large medical expenses on a monthly basis. However, once your deductible is met, the plan will pay for medications with the same co-pay as your other medical expenses.

Health insurance plans have been forced to take action to contain costs of quality health care delivery as health care costs have skyrocketed. Health insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays have steadily increased, and health insurance companies have implemented certain strategies for reducing health care costs. "Managed care" describes a group of stratgies aimed at reducing the costs of health care for health insurance companies.

There are two basic types of managed care plans; health maintenance organizations, or HMOs, and preferred provider organizations, or PPOs. So which health plan is best? How do you choose what type of health insurance best suits the health care needs of you and your family?

Both HMOs and PPOs contain costs by contracting with health providers for reduced rate on health care services for its' members, often as much as 60%. One important difference between HMOs and PPOs is that PPOs often will cover the costs of care when the provider is out of their network, but usually at a reduced rate. On the other hand, most HMOs offer no coverage for health care services for out-of-network providers.

Both HMO and PPOs also control health care costs by use of a gateway, or primary care provider (PCP). The primary care provider is responsible for coordianting health delivery for plan members. Care by specialist physicians require referral from the primary care provider. This cost containment strategy is intended to avoid duplication of services (for example, the cardiologist ordering tests that have already been done by the PCP, or a sprained ankle being referred to an orthopedic) and avoid unnecessary specialist referrals, tests and/or procedures.

HMO and PPO plans also contain costs by requiring prior approval, prior authorization, or pre-certification for many elective hospital admissions, surgeries, costly tests and imaging procedures, durable medical equipment and prescription drugs. When such services are required, the provider must submit a request to the health insurance plan review department, along with medical records that justify the service. The request is reviewed by the health insurance company to determine whether the services are justified as "medically necessary" according to the health plan policy and guidelines. Review is usually performed by licensed nurses, and, if the reviewer agrees that the service is necessary, approval is given and the service will be covered by the health insurance plan.

As health care costs continue to rise, many indemnity health insurance plans, or "fee for service" plans are being forced to adopt some managed care strategies in order to provide quality health care and keep health insurance premiums affordable. And as long as health care costs continue to rise, the distinctions among PPO, HMO, FFS and other health insurance plans will become blurred. Rest assured, however, that managed health care is here to stay

Useful Medical Information For Good Health Before Your Departure, During Your Trip And After Your Return

The diseases most commonly seen in travellers are diarrhoea, malaria (if you travel in a malaria-infested area), accidents (when travelling by car or swimming), wound infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

- Diarrhoea is caused by contaminated food and drinking-water. You must therefore be careful if your are travelling in poor hygiene conditions.

- Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes, so the first thing to do is to protect yourself against these mosquitoes.

- In order to prevent accidents during travelling, it is wise to apply the same precautions as those taken at home. In addition, it is very important that all wounds should be thoroughly disinfected in order to avoid infection.

· TRAVELLER’S DIARRHOEA

Many intestinal infections are attributable to infections picked up by mouth or hands. With a little care most of these illnesses can be prevented. Hepatitis A, typhoid fever, polio and cholera still occur in countries with poor hygiene, but these diseases are easily prevented.

However, the chance is rather large that you will still contract a light and/or nondangerous form of traveller's diarrhoea. Traveller's diarrhoea almost always spontaneously clears up after a few days, but can nevertheless be irritating. And a risk to your overall and travel health.

In the first place measures must be taken against dehydration. Likewise, treatment of the symptoms must be considered in order to reduce the number of bowel movements and relieve other symptoms such as fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. Sometimes a more serious form of diarrhoea occurs, for which specific treatment with antibiotics is indicated or where hospitalisation or fluid replacement appears unavoidable.

It takes only a few basic preventive measures to make your trip a success : Total prevention of traveller's diarrhoea is impossible and it is obvious that preventive measures can seldom be strictly followed at all times. But following preventive measures do significantly reduce the risk of contracting serious diarrhoea: In order to maintain good travel health wash your hands before eating and avoid (if possible):

- raw vegetables and fruits that you have not peeled yourself
- uncooked or unpasteurized dairy products
- insufficiently cooked sea foods (+ Hepatitis A !) and meat
- “local meals” which do not smell fresh
- ice-cream bought from street merchants (industrial ice straight from the deep-freeze is probably safe).

Cooked meals should be served hot. The place where you eat is also important. A meal taken from a stall presents a greater risk than a meal taken in a restaurant. Avoid restaurants where there are a lot of insects.
Avoid tap water and ice-cubes. Bottled water and soft drinks are safe. Watch out for bottle caps that have already been used.

It is very important to disinfect drinking-water on adventure trips. Total sterilisation of drinking water is impossible. The following measures considerably reduce the contamination risk and safeguard your travel health:

- Boiling the water is very effective.
- A good alternative is chemical disinfection with chlorine drops (e.g. Hadex®, Drinkwell chloor®; available in sport shops specialized in outdoor activities) or chlorine tablets (Certisil Combina®; chloramine tablets; available at the pharmacy). Their effect can be improved by first filtering unclear water. Silver salts (Micropur®, Certisil Argento®) are not very suitable to disinfect water, but they keep disinfected water germ-free for a long time.

For adventurous travellers conscious to travel health it is best to buy a portable water-filter. The use of antibiotics in order to prevent diarrhoea before it occurs can be dangerous + Also the use of other preventive medications is not recommended.

. How to treat diarrhoea?

It is extremely important to consume sufficient liquid and salt in order to prevent dehydration. You can do this by taking salt solutions, but tea with lemon, broth, soft drinks and fruit juice, supplemented with salt crackers are tastier. Commercial salt products are available on the market (ORS-solution).

Taking an anti-diarrhoea preparation (loperamide, e.g. Imodium®) can greatly reduce the number of bowel movements, with a considerable reduction of the complaints as a result. Imodium® may only be used by adults and older children and only for treating ordinary watery diarrhoea: 1 capsule after every loose movement up to a maximum of 4 per day.

Antibiotics are indicated :

1. If blood, mucus or pus are present in the stools.
2. If after 24 to 48 hours, there is no sign of improvement and the diarrhoea is accompanied by fever (above 38.5 C) or severe abdominal cramps, or if there are more than six stools per 24 hours and especially when these also occur at night.
3. Or if because of travel circumstances a quicker solution is absolutely desirable . Appropriate antibiotics are only to be used on doctor’s prescription

· SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Casual sexual contacts tend to be higher while on holiday abroad. Sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, form therefore an important risk for travellers. Quite often unintentional and unsafe sexual contact takes place under alcohol influence. Prevention while on holiday abroad is no different from the precautions you take at home. Adequate use of a condom, preferably bought at home, is absolutely essential. Only a water-soluble lubricant should be used, but it only offers a partial guarantee (e.g. KY gel). Vaccination against hepatitis B is advised. Always consult your doctor if you think you are at risk, even when there are no symptoms.

· MALARIA (swamp fever, malaria)

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite (called Plasmodium) transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. There are four different types of which Malaria falciparum is the most dangerous and the most widespread. The incubation period – the time between an infecting bite and the appearance of the disease – varies from ten days to four weeks (rarely several months).

The symptoms include attacks of fever, but can initially be quite similar to influenza. If adequate treatment is not started in time, an attack may sometimes result in death within a few days.

. Where does malaria occur?

Malaria only occurs in those areas in which Anopheles mosquitoes are present : in the tropics and in a large number of subtropical areas. From a height of 1.500 to 2.500 m onwards, depending on temperature and climate, Anopheles mosquitoes are either rare or non-existent.

In most big cities there is little or no risk at all of infection, except in Africa where a real risk exists.

Risk also exists in the suburbs of the big cities in Asia (e.g. in India). In a number of areas the risk varies according to the season.

. How can malaria be prevented?

It is very important for travel health to avoid mosquito bites : the Anopheles mosquito only bites between dusk and dawn, is rather small and hardly makes any noise.

- In the evening wear light-coloured clothing which covers your arms and legs as much as possible. Apply repellent cream with a DEET basis (20 to 50%, for children and pregnant women preferably 20 to 30%) to the uncovered parts of your body. Repeat this every four to six hours (it will not protect you all night).

Non containing DEET repellents were less examined; Autan-Active. and Mosegor. are however excellent safe products.

- Sleep in rooms that leave no access to mosquitoes, (mosquito nets on the sills, electrically-warmed anti-mosquito plates, air-conditioning) or sleep under a mosquito net impregnated with permethrine or deltamethrine hung over the bed with the edges tucked under the mattress.

If these measures are carried out correctly, the risk of malaria will be reduced by 80 to 90% and travel health is maintained

. The intake of pills as prevention

There is no drug efficient enough to prevent malaria 100%, which means that quite often a combination of measures is preferable. Also the drugs used have changed over the years. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of drugs should be considered against the risk of malaria infection. These risks are dependent on the visited country, and on the region, the season, the duration of your stay and the kind of trip.

Some people might be troubled by the side effects while taking antimalarial drugs. These are usually mild and are not always a reason to stop taking the pills. Sometimes it may be necessary to change to another type of medication due to intestinal problems, allergic reactions or other intolerance symptoms.

Therefore it is the doctor who can best decide for each individual which drug to use. This explains why individuals from the same group may end up taking different drugs.

Finally, as no drug is 100% effective in preventing malaria, it is important that if an attack of fever occurs in the first three months after your return from the tropics, a malaria infection should be considered as a possibility despite the correct use of the drug prescribed.

However, it is reassuring to know that malaria, provided it is recognised in time, is easy to treat without any danger of recurrent attacks. The belief that "once malaria always malaria" is totally untrue.
